Following is an extract from Ceylon & the Hollanders (1658-1796) by Dr. Paul E. Pieris

The Hollander declared, as unctuously as is usual, that God had entrusted him with a special mission to conquer, & incidentally to exploit, the heathen (1), & it might well be that some Hollanders really did believe in this profession.
Exploiting the country was the Company’s (2) main object & for this it was necessary that there should be peace, & that the people should develop on certain lines that the latent resources at their disposal; the result was a degree of peace & well being which forms a satisfactory contrast to what prevailed under the Portuguese.(3)
No exceptional oppression or violence was permitted, save what was dictated by the requirements of a Company intent on heavy dividends.

(1) To the Protestant Dutch, the Sinhalese Buddhists of Sri Lanka were heathens

(2) Dutch East India Company which held sway in the Western & Southern Coastal Belt of Sri Lanka

(3) In 1640 the Dutch defeated the Portuguese & persecuted them until they left these shores of Sri Lanka. Read VOC Galle Dutch Fort
