Guard over this island of Sri Lanka
Quote The Dipavamsa
The highest of men sent forth the irresistible power of his knowledge; the stainless teacher then saw the most excellent Lankadipa, an exquisite country, endowed with a beautiful climate, fertile, a mine of treasures, which had been visited by former Buddhas & had been inhabited by multitudes of saints. Perceiving the most excellent island of Lanka, a fertile region, a dwelling-place fit for Saints, the compassionate One who well understood the right & wrong time, thus taught; the present time Yakkas, Bhutas & Rakkhasasa (inhabit) Lankadipa, who are all too low for (adopting the doctrine of ) the Buddhas; their I can out root. Having driven out the hosts of Yakkas, & the Pisacas & Avaruddhakas, I will establish peace in the island & cause it to be inhabited by men. Let those wicked beings fully live out, their span of life ;( afterwards) there, I the most excellent Lankadipa, an opportunity will arise for (the propagation of) the Faith. Having removed (those) beings, having comforted many people & taught them the way, the road, the path of Saints, I shall reach complete Parinibbana like the setting sun. Four months after my Parinbbana the first convocation will be held; a hundred & eighteen years later the third convocation will take place, for the sake of the propagation of the Faith. Then there will be a ruler over his Jambudipa, a highly virtuous, glorious monarch known as Dhammasoka. This king Asoka will have a son, a clever man, Mahinda, the learned converter of Lankadipa. Having foreseen the circumstances which are full of importance, (& understanding) the right & wrong time, the blessed Buddha placed (divine) guard over this island

“Do thou, O lotus-hued One, protect with zeal Prince Vijaya & his followers, & the Doctrine that is to endure in Lanka for full five thousand years.”
Quote Mahavamsa the Great Chronicle of Ceylon (Sri Lanka)
When the guide of the world, having accomplished the salvation of the whole world & having reached the utmost stage of blissful rest, was lying on the bed of his nibbana, in the midst of the great assembly of gods, he, the great sage, the greatest of those who have speech, spoke to Sakka who stood there near him: “Vijaya, son of king Sihabahu, is come to Lanka from the country of Lala, together with seven hundred followers. In Lanka, O lord of gods, will my religion be established, therefore carefully protect him with his followers & Lanka.”
When the lord of gods heard the words of the Tathagata he from respect handed over the guardianship of Lanka to the god who is colour like the lotus. And no sooner had the god received the charge from Sakka than he came speedily to Lanka & sat down at the foot of a tree in the guise of a wandering ascetic. And all the followers of Vijaya came to him & asked him: “What island is this, sir?’ ‘The

Quote Sir James Emerson Tennent
“Notwithstanding their numbers & their power, it is remarkable that the Malabars were never identified with any plan for promoting the prosperity & embellishment of Ceylon, or with any undertaking for the permanent improvement of the island. Unlike the Gangetic race, who were the earliest colonists, & with whom originated every project for enriching & adorning the country, the Malabars aspired not to beautify or enrich, but to impoverish & deface;- & nothing can more strikingly bespeak the inferiority of the southern race than the single fact that everything tending to exalt & to civilize, in the early condition of Ceylon, was introduced by the northern conquerors, whilst all that contributed to ruin & debase it is distinctly traceable to the presence & influence of the Malabars”
